            Psalm 1 introduces the Psalter, the Hebrew book of worship.  It is a wisdom psalm and describes the nature and consequences of two different lifestyles—the choice between wisdom and folly.   Therefore Psalm 1 asks us as we enter into worship what kind of person we are.  There is no more important question that we can ask, and it deserves to be pondered deeply and at length.             One of the unfortunate characteristics of contemporary Christianity is the division between conservative and liberal Christians concerning the role of the church in society.  In general, conservatives emphasize changing the individual and liberals the structures of society.  Both tend to see their position as excluding the other.  The Bible will have none of this false dichotomy, and Psalms 1 and 2 hold the two perspectives together.
